How to Remove Hard Water Stains from Windows (and Keep Them Off)

If you live along the Wasatch Front, you've seen it: cloudy white spots and drip trails on windows near the lawn. That's hard-water staining — dissolved calcium and magnesium left behind when mineral-heavy sprinkler water dries on glass — and it's the most common window problem in Utah.

Why it gets worse the longer you wait

Fresh mineral spots sit on the surface and clean off with mild acid. But glass is microscopically porous, and under summer sun the minerals bond and begin etching in. Stage-one staining wipes away; stage-two needs professional compounds and polishing; stage-three is permanently etched into the glass and no cleaner on earth will restore it. The difference between stages is usually just one or two sprinkler seasons.

What works (and what to stop doing)

• White vinegar, dwell time, and a microfiber cloth handle light, recent spotting
• Don't scrub with abrasive pads — you'll grind the minerals into the glass and scratch it
• Skip razor blades on tempered glass — they leave permanent hairline scratches
• If vinegar plus patience doesn't cut it, the stain has bonded — that's the point to call a pro, not scrub harder
